The BMW logo that we all know and recognize immediately looks like a propeller for a reason. The company was founded more than a century ago as an aircraft engine manufacturer. In 1923 they started making motorcycles (a field where they are at the very top even today) and in 1928 they started doing what they are most famous for – making cars. The first one was the Dixi, a not so plush car, but a very popular one, helping the company survive the Great Depression which killed many companies.

Subsequent models were far more interesting to automotive enthusiasts. The 1930s’ Type 328 was an amazing motorsport machine, the post-war 501 was probably the first sleek and tremendously luxurious BMW, whose successor brought the world’s first light-alloy V8, the 507 was a stunning two-seater and all of these and others were strengthening BMW’s sales and reputation, allowing the company to invest into development and building a very strong brand. By 1980s BMWs were as much of a status symbol as a cool driving machine.

From then onwards BMW has been going strong keeping up with the best in the business and following the trends introducing lightweight roadsters like the Z Series, but also SUVs like the X5 and X6 coupe SUV and green vehicles like the city buzzer i3 and the futuristic sports car i8.

However, despite the new developments, BMW has also been very present in the market of conventional cars. The 3 Series, 5 Series, 6 Series and 7 Series cars have been competing in the most satiated markets, proudly holding their own against the likes of the Audis A4, A6 and A8, or Mercedes-Benz C-, E- and S-Class models. Latest downsizing trends in engine developing also brought about turbocharging for vast majority of BMW engines which makes them perfect for chiptuning despite the power rating, class, trim level or fuel type.
